General elections likely in February 2024


ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has opted to conduct the general elections in the second week of February 2024, as revealed by ECP insiders and reported by khabristan News on Friday.

Insiders familiar with the matter disclosed to khabristan News that the election commission is expected to release the schedule for the general elections after December 2023.

The insiders further noted that the election schedule will be made public 54 days after the completion of the delimitation process. Additionally, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has initiated discussions with prominent political parties regarding the upcoming general elections in the nation.

As part of its strategy, the electoral oversight body has chosen to engage with leaders of major political parties to chart out a course of action for the impending elections in the country.

The correspondence specifies that topics related to the delineation of constituencies, updates to electoral rolls, the execution of the general election, and the scheduling of the election will be deliberated during these meetings.

In an earlier development, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja decided to abstain from a meeting with the president, conveying his decision through a formal letter.

The communication expressed the ECP’s admiration for President Arif Alvi, while emphasizing that consultations on the election date are unnecessary in accordance with the Election Amendment Act.

The letter clarified that the president is authorized to announce the election date upon the dissolution of the assembly by the presidency. Nonetheless, the ECP retains its autonomy to declare the date, as detailed in the letter.

It is noteworthy that President Arif Alvi had extended an invitation to Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja for a meeting to finalize the date of the general elections on Wednesday.
