PM Shehbaz Sharif appoints LT. GEN. Asim Munir as the next Army Chief.

ISLAMABAD: The appointment of Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) has been made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The declaration was made by Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Twitter.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Twitter that the premier has made the appointments while using his constitutional authority. In addition, she stated that Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza had been selected to serve as the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) chairman.

The information minister added that the summary of the appointments has been sent to President Arif Alvi for ratification.

The names were finalised following the special federal cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair.

Speaking to the media minutes after the announcement was made by the information minister, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said the “advice” regarding new appointments had been forwarded to President Arif Alvi.

Gen Asim Munir was the senior most general in the list of seniority while Gen Sahir was number 2 on the list.

Who is Lieutenant General Asim Munir?

After the outgoing Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa, the most senior officer is Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir, who is currently serving as the Pakistan Army’s Quartermaster General.

Lt. Gen. Munir was commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment after completing the Officers Training School (OTS) program in Mangla.

Beginning in 2017, he was named Director General of Military Intelligence, and in October 2018, he was named Director General of ISI.

He was assigned to be the Corps commander of the Gujranwala, a position he held for two years before being promoted to the position of quartermaster general at the General Headquarters.

The 17th course of the Officers Training School in Mangla awarded the Sword of Honour to Lt. Gen. Munir. He has also been awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz.

The Pakistan Army’s three-star Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza is currently commander of the Rawalpindi Corps.

Throughout his career, the recipient of Hilala-e-Imtiaz (Military) has held senior leadership positions, including Adjutant General at General Headquarters, Chief of General Staff, and Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO).

In 1985, Mirza was promoted to second lieutenant in the Sind Regiment’s 8th Battalion.In 2019, he was elevated to the rank of lieutenant general.
