Ali Zafar’s ‘Main Nahi Hoon’ is a transcendent fusion of Pakistani, Turkish musical influences

Cross-cultural collaborations between Pakistan and Turkey continue to thrive, exemplified by singer-songwriter Ali Zafar’s latest release, “Main Nahi Hoon.” Unveiled on December 3, the song not only reflects the contemporary collaboration between the two nations but also draws inspiration from the rich tradition of Islamic Devotional Music.

Written by lyricist and poet Shoaib Ali, the song explores the Sufi concept of Fana, emphasizing the annihilation of the ego. It delves into Zafar’s realization of the connection between the human and the divine, reminiscent of the themes found in Dīwān al-Hallāj. The track begins with a fingerpicked acoustic guitar pattern, maintaining Zafar’s contemporary aesthetic.

The influence of Turkish folk music becomes evident through the lead melodies in Maqam Kurd played on the flute. The composition skillfully integrates Turkish elements, creating a unique and culturally rich musical experience. The song’s structure includes instrumental segments with a strong ensemble, symbolizing the oneness of existence.

Zafar incorporates Punjabi verses about Ishq, embracing South Asian Sufi thought and uniting thinkers like Waris with preachers like Al-Hallaj. The song’s tempo fluctuates strategically, paying homage to Sufi devotional music. In an emotional turn, the track revisits its opening lines, “Jo Mujh Main Bolta Hai, Main Nahi Hoon,” completing a full circle to the point of initial realization.

In a note accompanying the release, Zafar reflects on the universal struggle with the question of identity. He suggests removing the ‘I’ to open oneself to the understanding that humans may be vessels for something greater to flow through, manifesting in various art forms and expressions. Zafar hopes that the song resonates with the idea that from nothingness emerges everything. “Main Nahi Hoon” is available on all streaming platforms.
