Veteran Actor And India’s First Celebrity Talk Show Host Tabassum Govil Dies At 78

Veteran Bollywood actor and India’s first celebrity talk show host Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Tabassum Govil died on Friday after suffering two cardiac arrests. Her son Hoshang Govil announced the tragic news on Saturday. Tabassum was 78 years old.

Hoshang said his mother was recently hospitalized. However, on Friday night, she suffered her second heart attack, costing her life.“Few days ago, she was admitted to a hospital. She had gastro problem and we went there for check-up. She suffered two cardiac attacks at 8.40pm and 8.42pm. She passed away peacefully on Friday night,” Hoshang told Press Trust of India.

Much of the Indian film scene mourns Tabassam. Karan Johar, in particular, revealed that he wanted to “be a tabassum” when he grew up. The director of My Name Is Khan told his ETimes: Phool Kile Hain Gulshan Gulshan was the first chat show I ever saw. It fascinated me. I waited patiently by the black-and-white TV. When my father asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said I wanted to be a tabassum. ”

Tabassum Govil began her career as a child performer with the 1947 film Nargis. She was born in Mumbai in 1944.She went on to appear in numerous other films, including Mera Suhaag (1947), Manjhdhar (1947), and Bari Behen (1949), where she gained fame as “Baby Tabassum.” She appeared in the films Sargam, Sangram, Deedar, and Baiju Bawra in the 1950s.In the 1960 period film Mughal-e-Azam, which also featured Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Madhubala, she had a minor role. Tabassum Govil began hosting with India’s first talk show, Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan, which ran for 21 years from 1972 to 1993. Tabassum Govil interviewed a range of stars while also featuring in films now and then.

Tum Par Hum Qurban, released in 1985, marked her first film as a director. In 1990, she made a guest appearance as herself in the Rajesh Khanna and Govinda-starrer Swarg. She appeared in daily soap Pyaar Ke Do Naam: Ek Raadha, Ek Shyaam.

In 2021, Tabassum spent 10 days in hospital after contracting Covid-19. She is survived by her husband Vijay Govil, the elder brother of veteran TV star Arun Govil, and son Hoshang.
