Every 11 minutes a woman is killed by her own family.

New York: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has described violence against women and girls as the biggest violation of human rights in the world.

A day before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Secretary-General of the United Nations released a statement, in which he revealed that every 11 minutes, a woman or girl is killed by her partner, husband or a family member is killed.

He said that from Corona epidemic to economic fluctuations, other stresses also lead to more physical and verbal mistreatment of women. Not only this, women also face online violence every day.

Antonio Guterres said that half of humanity is paying a heavy price for these practices of discrimination, violence and mistreatment, which limit women’s participation in society and economic development. Their basic rights are denied and they are deprived of freedom.

The UN Secretary General further said that now is the time to end violence against women and girls, urging governments to engage civil society groups to eradicate such incidents.

The UN Secretary-General also appealed to governments to increase funding by 50 percent to 2026 for women’s rights-related organizations and movements.

It should be noted that recently a report of the United Nations revealed that domestic violence has become a serious problem.

The report found that globally more than one in ten women and between the ages of 15 and 25 had experienced sexual or physical violence by their own life partner.
