China begins testing driverless electric buses

WeRide, a Chinese self-driving car startup, has been granted permission to road test a Level 4 self-driving shuttle bus in Beijing’s 60-square-kilometer self-driving demonstration zone.

This is the first time that an unmanned shuttle bus equipped with Level 4 autonomous driving technology has undergone a legal road test in Beijing. Level 4 Self-driving means that the vehicle can drive independently in most situations.

The company said the shuttle will continue to be manned during emergency testing. The Municipal Labor Bureau of the High-Level Autonomous Driving Demonstration Zone issued the first regulatory document on short-distance automatic passenger transportation without manual checks in November, enabling the operation of unmanned shuttle buses in Beijing.

According to Chinese self-driving car startup WeRide, the front-mounted unmanned shuttle buses, without steering wheels, brakes or cabs, have built-in safety redundancy.

The bus is electric and reaches a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour. According to the company, it will be equipped with sensors such as laser radars, high-definition cameras and millimeter-wave radars, enabling accurate detection and detection of road conditions in all weather conditions.
