Plants cry when stressed after hearing ‘screams’, scientists conclude

In a world-flipping discovery in the field of plant acoustics, scientists have found that plants cry for help when stressed — and it’s possible to hear their screams!

According to the findings of a new Tel Aviv University study, tomato and tobacco plants demonstrated this crying ability when cut or dehydrated under observation inside a greenhouse.

“We found that plants usually emit sounds when they are under stress and that each plant and each type of stress is associated with a specific identifiable sound,” researchers explained in a university news release. “While imperceptible to the human ear, the sounds emitted by plants can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice, and insects.
