India’s health ministry has launched an investigation into Apollo Hospital Delhi, a part of the Apollo Hospitals chain, following media reports linking it to the illegal sale of kidneys by Myanmar nationals for organ transplants.
The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) has directed the Delhi Health Secretary to examine the matter, take appropriate action, and provide a report within a week. While Apollo Hospitals has not yet responded to the allegations, Indraprastha Medical Corp (IMCL), an associate of Apollo, has initiated an inquiry, rejecting the accusations as “absolutely false, ill-informed, and misleading.” A report in Britain’s Telegraph implicated Apollo in a “cash for kidneys” scandal, prompting the investigation. The hospital chain, headquartered in Chennai, operates over 70 hospitals across India, performing 1,641 solid organ transplants in 2022, according to company data.
