Islamabad: Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, a former senator and a prominent leader of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), was sworn in as the eighth caretaker prime minister of Pakistan on Monday. The oath-taking ceremony was conducted by President Arif Alvi at Aiwan-e-Sadar, attended by outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former cabinet members.
In a gesture of congratulations, Shahbaz Sharif conveyed warm felicitations to Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar Haq Kakar. Kakar’s role as caretaker PM will encompass guiding the country through the upcoming general elections scheduled in the following months.
Expressing confidence in the caretaker prime minister’s capacity to oversee impartial and transparent elections, outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed his sentiments in a farewell address to the nation on Sunday.
Among Kakar’s initial responsibilities is the selection of a cabinet to manage the nation’s affairs during the election period, which could span several months. The dissolution of the National Assembly occurred last week, setting the stage for elections within 90 days as mandated by the constitution.
Speculation had arisen over potential election delays, given the necessity for the election commission to redefine constituency boundaries based on the recently published census data to ensure accurate representation.
The appointment of Senator Anwarul Haq Kakar as Pakistan’s caretaker prime minister was officially announced by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Saturday. Prime Minister Shehbaz and opposition leader Raja Riaz jointly recommended Kakar’s appointment to President Alvi, with the president endorsing the decision through his signature.
