Former Olympian Khawaja Junaid has been banned for life by the PHF for making a serious mistake in the Asia Hockey Cup.
According to ARY News, during the match against Japan in the Asia Cup played last year, 12 players were mistakenly taken off the field and because of this, Pakistan’s goal in the match was also disqualified and thus the Green Shirts were disqualified from the World Cup.
At the time when this incident took place, the former Olympian Khawaja Junaid was the manager of the Pakistan Hockey Team. His grave mistake was that he was ignorant of the whole situation for which the Pakistan Hockey Federation has banned him for life.
After this incident, former secretary PHF Asif Bajwa formed a committee to inquire into the matter, but Khawaja Junaid resigned before appearing before the inquiry committee. Hockey Federation Secretary Haider Hussain again asked for the report of the committee and in the light of the committee’s report, Olympian Khawaja Junaid has been banned for life.
In this regard, Mian Ali Ashfaq, the legal advisor of Pakistan Hockey Federation, is of the opinion that there was a lot of laughter due to Khawaja Junaid. He has shown mis-conduct due to which Pakistan could not qualify for the World Cup.
He said that this action has been implemented according to International Hockey Federation (IHF) rules. The committee called Khawaja Junaid but he did not turn up, due to which he was banned and now Khawaja Junaid will not be able to participate in any hockey activities.
Mian Ashfaq added that the matter of feeding 12 players in the match against Japan was serious. Instead of appearing in the committee, Khawaja Junaid told through WhatsApp that he is not responsible. According to FIH rules, all matters are handled by the Darmanger. PHF president has approved the ban.
