Israeli army says Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza surrounded

The Israeli army has recently intensified its military operations in Gaza, with a focus on the Jabalia refugee camp, the largest in the region. The military claims to have targeted what it refers to as “terrorist infrastructure” and has surrounded the camp. However, this comes after multiple Israeli air attacks on Jabalia since October 7, resulting in significant casualties and infrastructure damage.

According to reports, Israel has expanded its offensive across the Gaza Strip, including areas near hospitals, and has intensified its ground operations, creating a challenging situation for civilians. The Norwegian Refugee Council has expressed deep concern about what it describes as Israel’s indiscriminate bombardment of Palestinian civilians in southern Gaza, reaching unprecedented levels.

Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Gaza, highlighted the severity of the situation, particularly for residents in Khan Younis city and Rafah city, as well as the 1.5 million evacuees pushed south by the Israeli military to avoid bombings in northern Gaza. Continuous heavy artillery shelling, air strikes, and mass bombardment have been reported, resulting in the destruction of residential homes, schools, hospitals, and other public facilities.

The report mentions that ambulances attempting to reach areas in Khan Younis were shot at, impeding evacuation efforts for the injured and retrieval of bodies. Meanwhile, Hamas resistance fighters are engaged in battles with Israeli forces, especially in the southern Gaza Strip, and warnings have been issued about an “even more hellish scenario” unfolding for trapped civilians.

As Israel’s offensive pushes deeper into Gaza, international aid organizations have raised concerns about civilians running out of places to flee. The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for the Palestinian territories, Lynn Hastings, emphasized the lack of safe spaces in Gaza and the potential for a dire humanitarian scenario.

The conflict has taken a heavy toll on the civilian population, with the Palestinian health ministry reporting nearly 15,900 casualties, including a significant percentage of women and children. Israeli soldiers have also faced casualties, with the death toll reaching 78.

There are allegations of indiscriminate bombing, invalidating the ability of aid organizations to respond effectively. The report highlights discrepancies in meter readings, defective meters not being replaced, and the charging of wrong detection bills, leading to low recovery ratios and an increase in AT&C losses.

The Israeli military denies instructing the World Health Organization to empty an aid warehouse in southern Gaza, but tensions persist as operations shift to the south. The United States has urged Israel to do more to prevent civilian casualties.

The conflict has wider implications, with fears of a regional escalation as exchanges of fire with Hezbollah in Lebanon continue. The West Bank has also experienced increased violence, with over 250 Palestinians killed. The situation is complex and multifaceted, involving political, humanitarian, and security concerns.
