In Islamabad, participants at a seminar on Thursday underscored the crucial role of personal accountability and collective efforts in combating corruption within society.
The event, titled “Curbing Corruption through a Documented Economy,” was organized by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in collaboration with the Legal Aid and Justice Authority (LAJA). Speakers emphasized the need for individuals to commit to performing their duties diligently to tackle corruption effectively.
Deputy Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Sohail Nasir, proposed that children should actively participate in preventing corruption in their surroundings. He highlighted the potential corrosive impact of negative societal behavior and indiscriminate criticism on the social fabric.
Mirza Irfan Baig, the Director General of NAB Rawalpindi, addressed the gathering, describing corruption as a curse that disrupts societal peace. Baig stressed the importance of refraining from seeking undeserved positions and emphasized the necessity of self-accountability. He shared that NAB Rawalpindi is currently handling cases involving Rs8 billion, with a successful recovery of Rs350 billion. Notably, NAB facilitated the return of Rs600 million to those affected in Arain City, with a conviction ratio exceeding 61 percent.
Dr. Amjad Saqib, Chairman of the Benazir Income Support Programme, emphasized the significance of personal transformation and advocated for demanding behavioral change from oneself before expecting it from others. He highlighted the remarkable achievements of his organization, Akhuwat, which has provided loans to over six million deserving individuals, disbursing over Rs220 billion with an impressive recovery ratio of 99.9 percent to date.
