In Islamabad, Shahnawaz Amir, the primary suspect in the Sara Inam murder case, received a death sentence and a fine of Rs1 million from a sessions court on Thursday. Meanwhile, the co-accused, Samina Shah, the convict’s mother, was acquitted by the court.
The verdict, delivered by sessions court judge Nasir Javed Rana, concluded a case involving the brutal murder of Sara Inam, a Canadian national, by her husband Shahnawaz on September 22, 2022. Sara’s postmortem revealed that she succumbed to multiple skull fractures inflicted during the assault by Shahnawaz.
Following the court’s decision, Sara Inam’s father expressed partial satisfaction, stating that while it was positive that the main perpetrator was convicted, he disagreed with the mother’s acquittal. He argued that, given the circumstances of the crime, the mother, Samina Shah, should not have been exonerated.
Addressing the media, Sara’s father recounted the events leading to the tragedy, highlighting the potential involvement of the mother. He emphasized the importance of implementing Shahnawaz’s sentence and expressed concern that the case might be forgotten if not pursued diligently.
Reflecting on the family’s struggles over the past year, he remarked, “For a year, the Almighty tested us,” describing the impact on their lives and the constant reminder of their daughter’s absence.
Shahnawaz’s admission of guilt during the police investigation played a crucial role in the case. He confessed to divorcing Sara over a heated phone conversation and described a violent confrontation in their Islamabad residence on the night of the murder. The suspect claimed that the argument escalated, leading to him assaulting Sara with a showpiece and later a dumbbell, causing fatal injuries.
The murderer admitted to concealing Sara’s body in the bathtub, eventually discovered by the police. Shahnawaz was apprehended by Islamabad Police on September 23, 2022, and Samina Shah, initially imprisoned in Adiala jail, faced legal proceedings but was eventually granted bail on November 2, 2022, after a lower court’s decision.
