ISLAMABAD: An incident involving UK-based social media activist Shayan Ali has led to the Islamabad police initiating legal proceedings against him under anti-terror legislation. The case has been filed at the Ramna Police Station.
The initial report, known as the First Information Report (FIR), outlines that Shayan Ali allegedly engaged in harassment of a judicial officer in London and documented the encounters through video recordings.
The FIR states, “There was an apparent attempt to assault a judicial officer,” and further explains, “One of the videos, which gained widespread attention on social media, depicted Shayan Ali threatening to severely disrupt the life of a judicial officer who was attending a training session at an educational institution in the United Kingdom.”
According to the FIR, YouTuber Adil Farooq Raja was also involved in the online activities related to this incident.
Earlier this month, a video circulated on social media showing Shayan Ali pursuing Additional District and Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar in Islamabad. Judge Dilawar had previously sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to a three-year prison term.
In response, the University of Hull issued an official statement stating that it has been conducting human rights and rule of law training for Pakistani judges since 2014. Participants for these training sessions are chosen by their respective High Courts.
The current group of participants was selected by the Islamabad High Court, the Peshawar High Court, and the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The University of Hull clarified that it does not play a role in the selection of judges for the training. The training, which spans nine days, is funded by the Commonwealth Secretariat in London and is organized by the University of Hull, UK. Shayan Ali was nominated for this training by Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq.
